GREEN DMV launches the Retro-Rescue Project at Gospel Rescue Ministries, a homeless shelter in Washington, DC's Ward 6. The project aimed to cut energy costs at the shelter as well as expose the residents to green jobs.

The event began with an address from Ward 6 DC Councilmember, Tommy Wells. Councilman Wells stated the District's most vulnerable residents face an increasing severe financial burden associated with rising energy costs. Councilman Wells also reinforced the District's commitment to policies that encourage energy efficiency.

The weatherization services performed at Gospel Rescue Ministries are designed to reduce energy costs. The project offered the residents an opportunity to observe the weatherization services first hand. The project also educated the residents about the benefits of energy efficiency and many participated in the weatherization process.

GREEN DMV volunteer, Kevin Palmer got involved in the weatherization efforts as he worked to help fill a gap that allowed air to escape at the foot of a door in the building's santuary. Kevin was one of the volunteers who signed up for the event through GREEN DMV's partnership with the "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" program.

Greater Washington Green Jobs Corps graduate, Quinton preps some weatherstripping to be applied to an exterior door that was leaking a large volume of air, contributing to the building's energy loss.

Volunteers prep the residents' art room to be painted with sustainable paint containing thermal conductivity values to help protect the area from energy loss as well as brighten up the room for the residents' enjoyment.

GREEN DMV volunteer Neil preps his paint roller to begin work on the residents' art room. All weatherization materials and painting supplies were generously donated by the Home Depot.

Gospel Rescue Ministries resident adds the final touches in the art room that he and other residents will soon enjoy.

GREEN DMV volunteer Tonya discusses the plans to apply the sustainable paint in the residents' sleeping area with Gospel Rescue Ministries' Pastor Morris.

GREEN DMV volunteers begin prepping the residents' sleeping area by moving furniture and applying painter's tape before the painting begins.
