If there is one issue that will one day define our children’s generation, it is that of climate change. Kids today are growing up in a world that may soon be forced to confront the realities of a drastically altered climate.  The challenge that this generation will confront is unlike that of any previous generation, and will require all of us working together to change the way we view and interact with the world around us.

Across the continent, as glaciers in Montana recede, droughts in the South Eastern United States worsen every year, and residents in Ontario report polar bears routing through their trash cans looking for food, it has become abundantly clear that we must act, and act now.

Environmental Awareness Day

Green DMV has chosen Jefferson-Houston School for Arts and Academics to host an Environmental Awareness Day which is located in Alexandria, VA. Jefferson-Houston has an enrollment of roughly 300 students and 80% of whom are students of color.

Today, many parents are struggling to earn decent wages and secure health care for their families. A majority of children from disdvantaged backgrounds have minimal exposure to what it means to be a steward of the environment.  Now, looking forward, we are starting to see a green wave of jobs and prosperity across the United States, and we need to make sure that this wave lifts all boats. Introducing the students at Jefferson-Houston elementary to the challenges we face with climate change and the opportunities of a clean energy economy will put them in a good position to contribute and prosper as they matriculate through their primary and secondary education.

Jefferson-Houston Environmental Awareness Day exposes students to several environmental issues facing us today, such as climate change. The students participate in activities that will connect the dots and show them the relationship between the environment and their everyday lives. Most importantly the students will be able to take what they have learned back home to their parents who will play an integral role in strengthening their interest in the environment.

Green DMV encourages students to become Environmental Stewards

GreenDMV is a local non-profit organization that is working to create a socially and environmentally responsible culture throughout the nation.  One way we can do this is by encouraging students to learn about and appreciate the environment and our impact on it.  In doing so, we can help raise an environmental consciousness in the future leaders of our country and create a culture of young people that make protecting the environment and sustainable living a priority and a way of life.
